Woodcarving Course | with Kerstin Thomas and Renato Costa e Silva

Deeply connected to nature and life at Cerdeira – Home for Creativity, Kerstin Thomas has been dedicated to wood sculpture since 1990, creating works that reflect her dialogue with the natural world and the expressive potential of reclaimed materials.
Renato Costa e Silva, ceramist and sculptor from the Azores, brings a complementary approach shaped by his experience with large-scale works and a deep appreciation for wood as a living, expressive material.

In this Wood Sculpture Course, guided by Kerstin Thomas and Renato Costa e Silva, you’ll explore the creative and technical process of transforming raw wood into a personal sculptural piece.

The course will teach participants to carve wood using both hand tools and power tools, exploring different ways to shape and express their ideas through the material. Participants will learn to work with this living material, from selecting and preparing the wood to carving and finishing it.

Each participant will develop their own project, receiving individual guidance throughout. This hands-on experience embodies the essence of the Cerdeira Arts & Crafts School: learning through doing, connecting with natural materials, and discovering an authentic artistic language.
